Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – July 22, 1982

It is Eid al-Fitr and a holiday. I had appointed Mr. [Ahmad] Jannati to lead the Eid prayer at the University of Tehran. Mr. Khamenei, without knowing about my decision, had gone to the university to lead the prayer himself. Mr. Jannati had also gone, and neither was aware of the other's decision. Eventually, Mr. Khamenei led the prayer, and Mr. Jannati made no comment. Mr. Khamenei came up to visit the Imam. When I told him [about the matter], he was regretful; because I am currently responsible for the prayers, although Mr. Khamenei is the main Friday prayer leader.

The Imam announced today that they would not have any meetings. I also did not go due to fever and toothache. Last night, on the southern front, our forces attacked the enemy, and this morning it was announced that they had destroyed nearly three hundred enemy tanks and armored personnel carriers, killed or wounded two thousand one hundred people, and captured two hundred fifty prisoners. However, they have abandoned the operational area because the bulldozers and loaders could not build trenches and berms to stay in the desert, and the risk of a renewed enemy attack, like a few days ago, was present.
