At eleven o’clock, I went to the Koushk office. I reviewed the media and bulletins and attended to my work. For the past few days, I have had a cold and a slight fever, but taking steam baths and using the swimming pool have helped me feel better.

I instructed my office to send a sharply worded denial to Javan newspaper. In violation of religious and customary norms, the paper had attributed statements to me based on unidentified sources, some of which had upset the left-wing faction, although the report had also defended Fa'ezeh and Mr. Karbaschi. Apparently, parts of my recent discussions with the leaders of the right-wing faction about the country’s situation and possible solutions had been selectively published. This amounted to gossip, factional exploitation, and a breach of trust. They had also published false reports in the past, which had made it necessary for me to send a letter of protest.
Among the international news, the decision by the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague to put Slobodan Milošević, [president of Yugoslavia], on trial for war crimes was significant. It would place considerable pressure on Yugoslavia. Another major issue was the rising tensions along the India–Pakistan border. India claimed that Pakistan had sent forces of Kashmiri mujahideen into Indian-administered Kashmir, where they had seized high-altitude positions near the border. For the first time, India had attacked them using fighter jets and helicopters. According to Pakistan, some of the bombs had fallen on Pakistani territory, and reports were released this morning that two Indian aircraft had been shot down. A few days earlier, one of Pakistan’s missiles had landed on Iranian territory in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan. Pakistan initially denied that the missile was Pakistani, but later admitted that a miscalculation had occurred during a missile test.
Fati came and collected the text of my memoirs for the year 1982 to prepare it for publication. It will be published by the Nashr-e Ma'aref-e Enghelab publishing house under Mohsen’s supervision. Mashhadi Rajab takes care of the garden at the house, but because of his old age—he is 79—his work has become difficult, and we need to hire someone to help him. Aqa Jalal brought the bill for repairing the swimming pool: 1.1 million tomans.
