We went to the University of Tehran to lead the Friday prayers. I began a discussion of ethics in the Quran and addressed the week’s relevant events in the second sermon. At noon, the children were gathered together. Yasser said that the 10,000 copies of Crossing the Crisis [The Record and Memoirs of 1981] were nearly sold out, and preparations for a second edition were underway.

He consulted me about accepting the representation of the Saudi Arabian airline in Iran. Many people were opposed, arguing that such a position was beneath the dignity of the children of the country’s highest-ranking officials.

In the afternoon, Hassan Agha Khomeini came to invite me to attend the commemoration of Imam Khomeini’s passing. He said that the seminary students in Qom had not given Mr. [Seyyed Mohammad] Khatami, [the president], a warm reception during his visit and were protesting the fact that no special meeting had been arranged for them. News reports also mentioned that numerous statements had been distributed criticizing the arrangements for the visit and the arrival of certain individuals from Tehran. He said that Ayatollah Javad Tabrizi had refused to meet Mr. Khatami, while the other meetings had gone well. The poor turnout of seminary students at the speech delivered in the shrine courtyard had also prompted unfavorable interpretations.

He reported that serious disagreements had emerged among left-wing circles, citing the situation in Tehran’s City Council as an example. The Association of Combatant Clerics [Majma-e Ruhaniyun-e Mobarez] was considering distancing itself from the liberals and reaching an agreement with the right-wing faction to ensure that left-wing forces would not be excluded from the parliamentary elections. He asked me to accept the position of head of the Judiciary, saying that Mr. Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi [Shahroudi] was incapable of running the Judiciary. I declined.

In the afternoon, I spent some time reading Effat’s memoir notes, which she is currently working on.
