Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 5, 1983

I was at home all day. [Ayatollah] Mr. Khamenei led the Friday prayers. In the morning, Ahmad Aqa came, and we talked about [reshuffling] the cabinet, the war, and high prices, and he said that it had been proposed to the Imam that, to prevent the infiltration of the Anjomanis and Tudeh members, they should appoint a representative in the Ministry of Education; I said their influence was not significant enough to warrant such a measure. He said the Imam wished, in some way, to make amends for Mr. [Fazlollah] Mahallati's hurt feelings. Mr. [Fazlollah] Mahallati also came and was very dissatisfied that recently the Imam had placed all the responsibilities on Mr. [Hassan] Taheri Khorramabadi, and his wish was to remain in the IRGC and divide the work with Mr. [Hassan] Taheri [Khorramabadi].

I spent some of the time writing up the delayed parts of my memoirs. The propaganda for the second phase of Valfajr 2 began with [Ayatollah] Mr. Khamenei's announcement from the Friday prayers. But they do not have much to say; unless they provide the details of the operation later. I also talked with [my son] Mohsen for a while to bring him up to date on the country's situation. In the afternoon, a group of the guards from the residence came; I asked how they were doing. Mr. Nateq-Nouri [Minister of Interior] came and spoke at length about the disputes within the government, the positions being taken, the problems and criticisms, and his expectations of us. I tried to explain the points in his conduct that I had judged to be mistaken; it was not without effect, and some decisions were made. Sheikh Mohammad Hashemian and his family came. There was no one at home. We entertained them at home with sandwiches - which we got from outside.
