I had not read the book, so the matter was postponed to another time. Several groups of government officials came for New Year visits. Most of the discussions concerned the Balkans and Kosovo. Officials at the Foreign Ministry believe that Yugoslavia will not surrender and that, eventually, Europe will yield under pressure from the refugees and public opinion.
The officials of the Secretariat of the [Expediency Council] came. We discussed how to review the general policies of the Third Development Plan. Mr. [Abdolali Ali] Askari, former manager of the Refah chain of stores, came and sought assistance in transferring a major gas project to the [IRGC] Cooperative Foundation. At night, I was a guest of the Leader. We discussed the need to make amends for the way Colonel Khouri had been treated, and it was agreed that they would rectify the matter. I conveyed Mr. Saberi Hamadani’s remarks. It was agreed that follow-up would be undertaken regarding his going to Hamadan. We discussed Mr. Karbaschi’s case, and it was agreed that he would tell the Prosecutor General that, in order to obtain more time for review, the case should be sent to the Supreme Court. We discussed the situation of the press. He is dissatisfied with a number of newspapers and is considering a solution. He was pleased with my previous Friday sermon, particularly the material concerning April 1. We also discussed Kosovo and the book Step by Step Toward Meeting God; he does not consider Rumi a great man.
