It was Sweden's deadliest attack, with the country's prime minister calling it "painful."

The local police chief said at a press conference that the gunman is believed to be among the dead and that a search is underway at the school for other possible victims.

"We know that about 10 people have been killed here today," local police chief Roberto Ed Forrest told reporters. "But the reason we can't say more accurately at the moment is that the scale of the incident is huge."

The motive behind the crime has not yet been determined, however, according to Mr. Forrest, police believe the gunman acted "alone" and that they do not currently suspect a "terrorist" act, although he cautioned that many cases remain unknown.

Earlier, Swedish police reported a shooting at a school in the city of Örebro, 200 kilometres west of Stockholm.
