The kids tear the books apart joyfully after the last exam. Not out of playfulness, nor out of mischief; rather, it is a kind of revenge.

The children, after the last exam, tear up their books with joy. Not out of playfulness, not out of mischief; rather, it is a kind of revenge. Revenge against a year in which they had to memorize, but did not understand. It is a sign of a violent relationship between the child and the educational system; a place where the book has been not a tool for knowledge, but a tool of pressure.

We start the school year with the Alphabet Festival, but we end it with the shouting of tearing books. This contradiction is painful. What have we done that a book becomes a lifeless object of anger for a child?

This video is a document of our failure. Not the failure of the kids, nor the failure of the teachers; it is the failure of us adults. The failure of the cultural custodians who have reduced education to measuring sticks, fear, and punishment.

I wish someone in that school would have asked instead of scolding or suppressing: why have the children become so averse to books?
