At noon in my office, we consulted about the amendment to the law revising the salaries of employees [of the Islamic Consultative Assembly]; they have raised the salaries very substantially, which will have a bad effect on other organizations. The family of the late Salehi - a driver for the Assembly - who was killed by an errant bullet from one of the Assembly guards, came; I offered them my condolences. He had seven sons, two of whom he had lost; one at the front. He was a cheerful person. Mr. Aghabat Rafaat, the dismissed governor of Sistan and Baluchestan, came and complained about the Interior Ministry.
In the afternoon, I met with our ambassadors in Greece, Ivory Coast, Syria and the Iranian consul general in Karachi; each gave an extensive report. Mr. [Ali Akbar] Mohtashami [Iran's ambassador to Syria] said: Arafat's opponents are waiting for the aid we have promised; I said: we do not want to be responsible for splitting the PLO. When the situation becomes clear, we will help the main current of the struggle. He said: The Syrians are upset that, contrary to the talks with [Hafez] Assad, Iran has adopted an anti-Russian policy. I said: We are faithful to our word, but the Russians must not interfere in our internal affairs, the Tudeh Party, or the expulsion of spies, and regarding oil, the Syrians must abide by the agreement; if they cannot, they should inform us beforehand through the higher authorities.
I attended the meeting of the Central Council of the [Islamic Republic] Party; the council's disciplinary regulations were approved, and we heard the report of the conciliatory delegation's trip to Isfahan and decided that the Party should come to an understanding with Mr. [Jalal al-Din] Taheri [Friday prayer leader of Isfahan] and not distance itself from the others, and that the judicial matters should be pursued. It was decided that I would go to Isfahan. We broke the fast there.
