Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 30, 1983

We had a public session; the bill on the country's administrative divisions was under discussion. Before noon, I came to my office. Mr. [Mohammad] Mohammadi [representative of Gorgan] came, complaining about Mr. Nourmofidi [Friday Prayer Leader of Gorgan], who had threatened him during Friday prayers and demanded that he repent. Because he had said certain things in private gatherings, a report of the remarks had also arrived separately; he had criticized the state of the budget and the country's economic situation and the war. Mr. [Morteza] Fahim [Kermani] came and spoke of mismanagement in the construction of the Jiroft Dam. I told him to send a written report so that I could give it to the Ministry of Energy. Mr. [Asadollah] Kian Erthi, representative of Faridan, came; he complained about opposition from the [Islamic Republic] Party in Faridan toward him; I promised to look into it. The [Islamic Republic] Party has its own particular policy in every city. We hope Mr. Dori [Najafabadi] will be able to bring some order to it. I read some of the reports and answered the letters.

After resting, a group of professors from the University of Tehran came. They complained about pressure from Hezbollah students on the administration and professors, inadequate funding and lack of facilities, lack of attention to the universities, and greater privileges for the health services. I consoled them and gave them hope; they left satisfied. Then I spoke to 150 students in the Ministry of Energy's electronics engineering program about the importance of utilizing the immense power of water and dams and training specialists. I spoke separately with [Mr. Hassan Ghafouri-Fard], the Minister of Energy, about a project that had been designed during the time of Martyr Abbaspour [the then Minister of Energy] and has now reached the implementation stage.

Major Torabi [from the Army Advisory Office] came and gave reports on the ground and air forces. Engineer Saberi came and spoke of the opponents' influence in the [Iran Helicopter Support and Renovation] Company. I told the [Army] Advisory Office to look into it. A group of professors and administrators from the Teacher Training University came; they complained about the University Jihad and the Hezbollahis. I came home for iftar. We held the Night of Vigilance.
