Last night, around 12:30, a strong earthquake shook the doors and windows of the house. Less than an hour later, they received a phone call, based in the Dilman region in the north of the country. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported in the towns of Rudbar and Manjil. I gave the necessary orders and sent Mohsen to the area to bring more accurate news. There is a lot of damage and casualties.

Mr. [Hussain] Ibrahimi, [the representative of the Supreme Leader for Afghanistan], came to explain the issues of Afghanistan. Members of the [Central Council] of the Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan came and reported on the stages of unity; I talked to them. Mr. [Goodres] Iftikhar Jahrami, [Head of the Presidential Office of International Legal Services] came. He said the United States had agreed in The Hague to pay about $270 million for some of the weapons that we had in the United States for repair and had seized; I was supposed to answer later.

They came from the Ministry of Intelligence. They had remarks about some of the staff of the [presidential] institution. Dr. Velayati, [the foreign minister] came. He suggested that we send a representative to Turkey; I told our ambassador to go and talk.

Mohsen [Hashemi, head of the president's special inspection office] came to report on the inspection mission on the situation of the earthquake victims [Rudbar]; Mr. [Hamid] Mirzadeh, [Executive Vice President], regularly reported from Rasht on the situation of the earthquake victims and their needs. Dr. [Iraj] Fazel [Minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Education], [Mohammad] Saeedi Kia, [Minister of Roads and Transport] and the Governor of Guilan also reported; The situation of Rudbar and Manjil is bad. They say roads are closed due to mountain falls and helicopters cannot reach Guilan due to weather conditions.

In the evening, we held an extraordinary meeting of the government to discuss the earthquake issues and how to provide relief and took decisions; I stayed in my office at night for the earthquake.
