I fasted, but in the afternoon it was announced by the religious authorities that it had not been established that today was the beginning of Ramadan. A number of people came to the house early in the morning, and Mr. Tahririan reported the arrest of Mr. Minachi and asked for help. I agreed to speak about it. Mrs. Shahid Motahari also came and insisted that the homes of certain prominent figures had become centers of counterrevolutionary activity, and she wanted a solution.
I stopped by Heart Hospital to inquire about Mr. Khamenei’s condition. Then I went to the University of Tehran to lead the Friday prayers. Mr. [Habibollah] Asgaroladi was the speaker before the sermon. I delivered the sermons and led the Friday prayers. I was deeply saddened and tried to conceal my grief and appear confident and hopeful. I do not know how successful I was.
The crowd was very large because of the current circumstances, and I gave an analysis of the internal conflicts based on the struggle between faith on the one hand and disbelief and hypocrisy on the other. I also gave an interview there to the German news agency regarding the martyrdom of the seventy-two people.
In the afternoon, I rested at home, and at five o’clock I attended a meeting of the Supreme Defense Council at the Army Headquarters. We decided to reject the Ramadan ceasefire proposal that had been given to our ambassador in Geneva by [Olof] Palme. The accumulation of work requires us to work even on holidays.
Mr. [Valiollah] Fallahi spoke about his disagreements with Mr. Zahirnejad, the Ground Forces commander, and sought a solution. It is a problem that is damaging the war. It was decided that we would deal with it seriously. We heard a report on the state of our resources and forces; we are facing serious problems with supplies.
We were guests for iftar at the home of the martyred Beheshti, and many friends were there, including Dr. Mahmoud Rouhani, who had been reported to be among the martyrs or wounded. It turned out that he had not attended the meeting; he had left before it began.
With some of our closer confidants, we discussed the presence of numerous infiltrators from the various groups in sensitive positions, the possible dangers lying in wait, and the need to strengthen security measures, exercise greater caution, and closely protect Mr. Khamenei.
