After Mr. Khamenei was injured, the Imam assigned me to lead the Friday prayers. In preparation for the Friday prayers, I studied some of the rulings concerning Friday prayers in Tahrir al-Wasila. Then I went to the hospital to visit Mr. Khamenei. Contrary to expectations, I found him weak. It turned out that the previous night, the fluids from the blood transfusions had caused considerable distress to his lungs, and he was being given artificial respiration. The doctors assured me that there was no danger and that such a condition was normal in these circumstances.

At ten, I went to Parliament. Mr. Ansari, the representative from Nishapur, came and sought help over the harassment he had faced in Nishapur from some people. He believed that the Party [the Islamic Republican Party] was behind it.

Dr. [Ali-Akbar] Velayati came and spoke about the medical commission that had been arranged for the Imam. It was decided that he would discuss it with Dr. [Hassan] Arefi.

The Friday Prayer Headquarters called, and the arrangements were finalized. We had discussions and took some measures with Mr. Mahdavi [Kani], the Minister of the Interior, and the Internal Affairs Committee regarding the parliamentary and presidential election laws.

In the afternoon, I attended the memorial service of the Islamic Republican Party for the victims of the bombing at the Party’s central headquarters. It was said that the number of martyrs was two or three more than seventy-two, but it was decided not to change the number because of the significance and symbolic value of the number seventy-two, its resemblance to the martyrs of Karbala, and the fact that the figure had already become established.

I met with the leaders of the Amal Movement of Lebanon. They expressed their support and asked for assistance. Then I met with employees of the Industrial and Scientific Research Organization, who had administrative and financial problems. I came home early that night and, since we had to wake up before dawn to begin fasting, I had a light dinner and went to sleep.
