Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – July 17, 1982

I stayed at home all day. I spent most of my time studying and writing, and handled matters by phone. I also contacted the front. The front is quiet, and our forces were unable to reach their objectives. Iraq is resisting and has intensified its airstrikes. They have also taken approximately five hundred of our soldiers as prisoners, and it seems we have suffered about the same number or more martyrs, and many wounded as well. They need heavy machinery such as loaders, bulldozers, and compressors, and it was decided that the Ministry of Roads would provide them.

Gradually, for those who were pressuring to finish the war with operations without delay, it is becoming clear that this is not so easy, and the enemy, defending on its own soil, is more motivated. Because explaining such matters to the public is not appropriate and would weaken the morale of the combatants and the people. Many have still not come to this realization and think that there is a political reason for the limited number of operations.
