Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – April 4, 1990

I reached my office at half past eight. At half past nine, Mr. [Hossein] Mozafar, the deposed Director General of Education, came to Tehran; He defended himself and called the accusations of factionalism, bandism and opposition to the leadership baseless and complained about the many dismissals and installation of education.

Mr. [Abbas] Imam Juma, an Iranian reciter who has won the first place in the international competition of the Holy Quran in Malaysia, along with [Mr. Ali Akbar Hanifi], an Iranian judge, came and gave a report. They praised the advancement of Quran reading techniques in Iran after the revolution; I encouraged them. I gave Qari ten coins of Bahar Azadi and one coin to the referee along with the book "Amir Kabir, or the Hero of Struggle with Colonialism".

The members of the Central Council of Tahakim Vahdat office came. They defended themselves regarding the accusations of opposition to the leadership and the government and extreme positions, and they called for the problem of the emergence of the Islamic movement against them under the title of "Students' Islamic Society" and the increase in the powers of the leadership representatives in the universities and of course the occurrence of restrictions for themselves.

Dr. Velayati [Foreign Affairs Minister] came. Negotiations and decisions were made about the issue of hostages in Lebanon and relations with Saudi Arabia and the response to the accusations made by the western media against Iran.

In the evening, the government board had a meeting. We decided on how to prepare and approve program and budget regulations and negotiated about free zones. Members of the government delegation were my guests at Iftar. On the way home, I went to the children's house. A reception was held at Fati's house. I also saw the newly built houses of Mohsen and Faeze; not bad It could be made even better; I had never seen their houses before.
