Mr. Alija Izetbegović, the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, arrived. Due to his Islamic activism and support for the Islamic Revolution of Iran, he had previously been imprisoned twice; recently, given the new circumstances, he was elected with the votes of the local Muslim population. Forty percent of the people in Bosnia are Muslim.
He expressed concern regarding the potential for conflict between Muslims, Serbs, and other groups, and requested that we provide light weaponry and helicopters. I gave a favorable response and instructed the Minister of Defense to provide assistance.
A special envoy from the President of South Korea arrived. He delivered a letter from the President, extended an invitation for me to visit South Korea, requested our support for South Korea’s admission to the United Nations, and spoke about expanding relations. In the evening, the Economic Council held a meeting; the discussion focused on currency exchange rates.
