In my opinion, Seyyed Ahmad Khomeini had a plan to replace the Ayatollah in his mind, which he pursued by radicalizing the atmosphere, especially in igniting Iran's relations with Europe.
Apparently, his plan was half finished with the sudden death of Ayatollah Khomeini. In addition to his effective intervention in Ayatollah Montazeri's resignation from the position of deputy leader, Seyed Ahmed, in my opinion, sought to diminish and perhaps remove the late Hashemi Rafsanjani from the decision-making circle, because he knew correctly about the power of the deceased in the matter of succession.

In the post-war period, Hashemi tried with all his might to normalize relations with Europe. Seyyed Ahmed's targeting of relations with Europe was not unrelated to Hashemi's plan. He had obviously aimed at Hashemi, but after the death of Ayatollah, his arrow did not hit the target and fell to the ground in the middle of the road.
Of course, late Hashemi thought himself too smart. He thought that he had arranged things in his own favor in the matter of succession, when in fact he had emptied his feet!
