Vahideh Zahraei, the director of the Water Institute at the University of Tehran, said in an interview with IRNA:The opportunity to revive Lake Urmia is gradually being lost; the drying up of Lake Urmia has multiple consequences, including the outbreak of various diseases and cancers. The condition of Lake Urmia has reached a very critical state this year, such that its water level has fallen below 1270 meters. According to the latest statistics released on August 1, it was recorded at 1269.74 meters, marking a decline of about 50 centimeters.Recently, research results have been published regarding the disastrous condition of the lake and the rising salt storms around it, which show that it is already causing problems for the residents of the area, including an unprecedented increase in temperature in the provinces of West and East Azerbaijan.
