Emergency Water in Tehran

The water situation in Tehran is serious and the government has been forced to close the city.  The president has warned that "tomorrow we may not have water to drink."  Although Tehran's rainfall is higher than the national average, high population density has put a lot of pressure on resources.  Only 5 % of Tehran's five dams are filled and half the volume is dead.  The Lar Dam is almost dry.

Tehran is the second poor province after Sistan -Baluchistan.  The per capita of Tehrani water is about 2 cubic meters, while the average country is 2 cubic meters.  The population of 2 million in one percent of the country's area is 2 percent of the total population.  The land subsidence rate in southwest of Tehran has reached 5 cm a year and threatens infrastructure such as railways, airports and gas lines.
