The salinity of water in Bahonmshir has reached sea level. According to Dr. Hamidreza Khodabakhshi, head of the Khuzestan Water Industry Engineers Association, in some sections, salinity has exceeded 40,000 micromhos; a figure that signifies the complete dysfunction of drinking and agricultural water resources in Abadan and Khorramshahr. He warns that from Ahvaz downstream, the Karun River has effectively turned into a channel for discharging urban, industrial, and sugarcane drainage wastewater, and the reduced flow upstream has allowed the saline waters of the Persian Gulf to advance into the river. This situation has pushed the southern Karun into a stage of "environmental and human collapse."
