Jalaleddin Taheri Isfahani was the Friday prayer leader of Isfahan from 1972 until his resignation in 2002. He was an elected representative of the people of Isfahan in the Assembly of Experts for the Constitution and also in the Assembly of Experts for Leadership.

Until the late 1990s, he was a key figure in one of the two political currents in Isfahan, and afterward, he became known as a prominent cleric who criticized the government and supported Iranian reformists.

The publication of his open letter of resignation addressed to the Supreme Leader in protest against the government’s actions, particularly concerning the house arrest of Hossein Ali Montazeri, caused significant controversy.
