Home/PoliticsA Critique of the Foreign Policy Section of Mostafa Tajzadeh's Interview with Le Point — by Mostafa DaneshgarRead3 minutes -Thursday 2025/12/18 - 20:16News Code:23972Share First and foremost, it must be stated that this writing is an intra-discourse critique within the transitionist camp. Mostafa Daneshgar Survival-Oriented Rationality or a Genuine Return to Rationality?First and foremost, it must be stated that this writing is an intra-discourse critique within the "transitionist" camp, rather than an external confrontation with it. The focus of this critique is specifically on the foreign policy section of Mr. Mostafa Tajzadeh's interview with Le Point magazine.Positive Point: Moving Beyond the Policy of Destroying IsraelA positive and noteworthy point in this interview is the clear explicit statement on the necessity of abandoning the policy of "destroying Israel"—and doing so with the important argument that such a mission is neither Iran's "duty" nor, fundamentally, "within its capacity and power." This stance is considered a significant step in distancing from a costly and unrealistic ideological foreign policy and is more aligned with national interests, development-oriented goals, and the preservation of territorial integrity.First Critique: Optimism Toward "Signs of Rationality"However, where Mr. Tajzadeh speaks of "signs of rationality becoming dominant in the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic," the text of the interview carries a kind of analytical optimism—an optimism previously seen in his assessment of the system's reconsideration regarding the issue of mandatory hijab. From an analytical perspective, what is happening inside the country today is not the product of a stable rational shift, but rather a tactical retreat by the system in response to foreign pressure and the accumulation of social anger. To prevent accumulated grievances from turning into protests and conflict, the sovereign power has been forced into limited domestic retreats to maintain the possibility of continuing the policy of "resistance" abroad. This approach is not rational in the sense of problem-solving, but rather instrumental and temporary, and cannot be considered a sign of the return of rationality.Second Critique: Continuation of the Rationality of Resistance in the FieldIn terms of field operations, there are no clear signs of a real strategic shift. Numerous regional reports indicate that the reconstruction of the "Axis of Resistance" remains on the agenda, and officials close to the hard core of power have repeatedly emphasized this approach. In such circumstances, the claim of a structural distancing from previous policies relies more on political hope than on field realities.Third Critique: Survival-Oriented Rationality vs. Development-Oriented RationalityWhat we are witnessing today is merely the Islamic Republic refraining from initiating a direct conflict—and even that is not due to strategic rethinking, but within the framework of the same old rule of "preserving the system." This type of rationality is survival-oriented rationality; a rationality that:Is not consistent with the country's vital priorities in the areas of development and managing "mega-crises."Is not proportional to new regional and international threats and requirements.Lacks the "necessity of the era" and the required modernization in international relations. In other words, avoiding war does not necessarily mean adopting a rational foreign policy; just as stagnation is not a substitute for strategic reform.ConclusionAccordingly, speaking of a "return of rationality" in the Islamic Republic's foreign policy is valid only if it transcends the level of survival-oriented caution and leads to deep, structural, and development-oriented decisions. In the current situation, rather than witnessing a problem-solving rationality, we are facing a type of minimal crisis management. Therefore, the focus of critique and pressure must be directed toward the elites present within the power structure—to compel the establishment to adopt measures proportionate to the conditions of the country, the region, and the world. Without such a shift, hoping for the institutionalization of rationality in foreign policy is more of a wish than an analysis.Related news Tajzadeh in an interview with Le Poin: The people can put an end to the rule of clerics in Iran.
