A part of Seyyed Mohammad Khatami's first speech at the United Nations

Khatami, with his beard and smiling lips, showed people a different image of the clergy.  Khatami spoke about civilization, culture and history for the closed and intimidated society whose culture minister was Mustafa Mirsalim and whose people paid heavy fees for transporting videos.  Khatami spoke openly about pursuing and prosecuting the perpetrators during the turbulent times when some people considered the killing of dissidents to be their natural right.

For the first time in Iran after the revolution, Khatami had become an election candidate who was supposed to swim against the tide and challenge the usual consensus of those in power on a particular person and lead a real competition, not a ceremonial one.

Khatami spoke of a proud Iran and invited the world to dialogue and interaction.

Khatami was the bearer of a discourse that was very heavy and difficult to accept for the "non-combatant" society with thousands of years of tyranny./Farhad Ghanbari
