Today, with the attack on the railway line in Iraq during the passage of a train carrying American military personnel, a new chapter in the struggle against the occupiers began, and multiple operations were carried out against them. In the UN Security Council, the United States intervened to veto the Arab-proposed resolution on preventing the expulsion of Yasser Arafat, the President of the Palestinian Authority.
I woke up to the sound of the call to prayer from the shrine and did not go back to sleep. I wrote down yesterday's memories, and after visiting the shrine and having breakfast, we went to the Seminary Management Center [of Mashhad] for the inauguration of its building. I visited an exhibition.
A group of female seminary students complained that they do not have advanced jurisprudence classes and are not allowed to attend the men's advanced jurisprudence lessons. In my speech, I also criticized this situation and said there is no justification for preventing them from attending advanced classes, and that barring them is an injustice. I asked the scholars present to speak if they had any defense; no one had an answer.
At the gathering of scholars and seminary students, Mr. [Vaez] Tabasi, [Custodian of Astan Quds Razavi], delivered the welcome address, and I gave a detailed speech about reviving the role of Islam and the clergy up to the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, the firm confrontation with global arrogance, and the necessities of strengthening the role of Islam.
Before noon, I had discussions with Mr. Tabasi about the country's and the world's situation and matters concerning Astan Quds. In the afternoon, [Mr. Seyyed Hassan Rasouli], the governor, and the managers of the infrastructure sectors of Khorasan Province came. They gave a report on the state of gas, water, electricity, telecommunications, agriculture, industry, roads, and the province's budget allocations, and said that my trip last year to the site of the Friendship Dam, [on the Iran-Turkmenistan border], had completely resolved the problems and that the dam would soon begin filling with water. They asked me to visit the Bafq-Mashhad railway project.
At night, a large number of scholars and managers attended a dinner banquet. I spoke about the issue of nuclear energy and the Additional Protocol. Mr. [Gholamreza] Ansari, the governor of Mazandaran—who had lost his university-student son in an accident—came. I offered him my condolences.
Today, with an attack on the railway line in Iraq during the passage of a train carrying American soldiers, a new phase of the struggle against the occupiers began, and multiple operations were carried out against them. In the UN Security Council, the United States intervened to veto the Arabs' proposed resolution on preventing the expulsion of [Yasser] Arafat, [President of the Palestinian Authority], showing that America is not sincere in its stated opposition to Arafat's exile or killing.
The Participation Party [of Islamic Iran], in a statement, proposed that Iran accept the Additional Protocol, and this has been welcomed by Western countries.
In Saudi Arabia, a major fire broke out in a prison south of Riyadh, and according to Saudi officials, 70 people were killed. Government opponents say the death toll is 150 and claim the fire was deliberate.
