I attended to administrative matters until noon. The Iraqis have carried out air attacks on Dezful and Ilam, martyring more than twenty people, wounding more than one hundred, and destroying one hundred houses. An Iraqi official has said that they have a weapon which they will soon use and which will destroy one hundred thousand people. It is neither a nuclear nor a chemical weapon, and we have no knowledge of such a thing. There was some investigation and consultation with the officials. It is likely to be a bluff; perhaps it is real.
In the afternoon, a group came and criticized the idea of completing the Bushehr power plant, but they could not convince me. Dr. Ebtekar and Engineer Soltanzadeh from Jihad were also present. Mr. [Mohammad Ali] Nazaran also came and spoke about the weakness of the Air Force commanders and the future of intelligence. Dr. Khansari and Captain Dadfar from the Ministry of Defense came and gave a report on their trip to Isfahan to investigate the possibility of using Mr. Tahmasbi's invention for defense against missile attacks; he has refused to give them any information. It was decided that the matter would be pursued. They also raised their innovation of using the A.D.S4 radar in Karaj for the Hawk sites in Tehran. It would be a good success if we could make the Hawks more active and compensate for the shortage of parts.
The managing directors of Bank Tejarat and Bank Sanat-o-Madan also came and discussed the elimination of usury and the confiscated industries, and were concerned about capitalists taking advantage of the elimination of interest and the return of the industries to them. At night, we had a meeting with the Revolutionary Guards commanders at the Imam's office. The Imam has said that the Revolutionary Guards should adopt an organizational structure and military order, establish iron discipline, and create a chain of command. We discussed this and it was decided that preparations would first be made and then action taken; presumably, it also has opponents.
The President called and informed me of a possible assassination attempt against me on Ashura Day, which the Revolutionary Guards had reported. It was decided that greater precautions should be taken.
