Early in the morning I went to the dentist. I arrived at Parliament at eight o'clock. Mr. [Mohammad] Yazdi had already started the session. The Intelligence Ministry bill was under discussion, but it was not finished. I went to the office, handled administrative work, and read the reports. The propaganda atmosphere in the Arab world and the West is to portray Iran as warmongering and extremist. The Western countries that want to help Saddam play their role through these very positions.
At noon, the company building the prefabricated houses came for negotiations about the houses it is constructing for Parliament. Next to the old Parliament building, on land that the previous regime had designated for representatives' housing, we are building houses for the representatives. It is necessary from the standpoint of welfare and security.
Mr. Mostafa Tabrizi, the representative from Bojnord, came and complained about the pressure on people who had previously shown some inclination toward the Ummat group and..., spoke of the danger of right-wingers, and consulted about research into the history of land ownership in Iran.
A group of literacy officials from Khorasan came in the afternoon and objected to Mr. [Mohsen] Qaraati's new plan as the Imam's representative in the Literacy Movement. This plan is based on contracting; that is, instead of a regular salary, the teacher is paid a sum for each illiterate person who becomes literate.
Early in the evening I attended the central council of the Islamic Republic Party. The discussion was about the position of the party newspaper and which party unit it should come under: propaganda, the executive board, the central council, or remain independent. The discussion matured, but it was not concluded.
Late at night I came home and spoke by telephone with Rafsanjan, with Ali Agha Hashemi, the father of Miss Azam Hashemi, about Mohsen's marriage. It was decided that Effat would go to Rafsanjan and bring Azam so that the marriage contract could be performed before Muharram. I am pleased with this marriage. Azam is a good girl. We also spoke with Mohsen by telephone. He is in a great hurry, and he is right. He said that since Mr. [Hossein Ali] Montazeri had recommended it, he was getting married.
