With the release of three prisoners of war, Milošević’s request for a meeting with [Bill] Clinton, [President of the United States], and increased activity by [Viktor] Chernomyrdin, [Russia’s special envoy], the possibility of an end to the war in the Balkans has increased.
With the release of three prisoners of war, Milošević’s request for a meeting with [Bill] Clinton, [President of the United States], and increased activity by [Viktor] Chernomyrdin, [Russia’s special envoy], the possibility of an end to the war in the Balkans has increased. Nevertheless, NATO is insisting on its conditions, the United States has rejected Milošević’s request for a meeting, and they have intensified the pressure of the war.
Before noon, Prince Sultan [bin Abdulaziz], the Second Crown Prince [and Minister of Defense] of Saudi Arabia, and his entourage came. He said that the progress in cooperation and friendship was a continuation of the effects of my visit. He apologized that, because he had been in the desert during my visit, an opportunity to meet had not arisen. We discussed bilateral cooperation, Iraq, Kosovo, and Afghanistan.
Dr. Mansour Mirkhani, a specialist in [cardiology and] vascular and arterial diseases, came. He had studied and worked in England and the United States and was retired. He said that, because of one of my speeches, he had decided to remain in Iran for the rest of his life and teach his specialty. He said that his medical practice had become very busy and asked for my help in establishing a training course. I introduced him to Islamic Azad University.
Dr. [Ali] Larijani, [Mahmoud] Vaezi, and [Seyed Hossein] Mousavian came to follow up on the proposal to establish the Independence Party. I said that I had spoken with the Leader, and although he agrees that the right-wing current has little chance of success in the elections and has limited support, he does not consider establishing a moderate party to be the solution. It was agreed that they themselves would go and speak with him.
In the afternoon, the Minister of Labor, ministry officials, representatives of the Workers’ House, and exemplary workers came. Messrs. [Hossein] Kamali and [Alireza] Mahjoub spoke, and gifts were presented to the exemplary workers. They complained about the Parliament’s efforts to amend the Labor Law. I also spoke about the value of work and the worker.
I then continued attending to affairs until nine-thirty and returned home.
