Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – May 16, 1982

At 7:30, I went to Parliament for the open session. The continuation of the debate on the mining bill was on the agenda, and it was approved. After the break, I handed the chairing of the session over to Mr. [Mohammad] Mousavi Khoeiniha and went to my office to handle administrative work. I reviewed the reports. The Gulf Cooperation Council—which was formed after Iran's victory—was unable to reach a decision due to differences of opinion regarding dealing with Iran. Some favor friendship with Iran.

During the break, we talked about Mr. [Mohammad] Yazdi's resignation, and it was decided that he would withdraw it. The Teachers Society of Qom Seminary has requested the same. The resignation of Mr. [Mohammad] Rajaian [Representative of Zanjan]—which was tendered because of the insult by Mr. [Alireza] Yarmohammadi [Representative of Bam]—was discussed, and it was decided that he should also reconsider, which was done.

In the afternoon, I attended the Central Council meeting of the [Islamic] Republican Party. Members of the Islamic Association of Telecommunications made a disturbance and caused disorder in the office over the replacement of a director general, and a number of them have been detained; they have no valid argument.

At night, there was a meeting of the Consultative Council of the heads of the three branches. We decided to permit free travel abroad and the entry of foreigners into Iran. I went to Parliament to sleep.

In the afternoon, I met with the staff of the Parliament's Public Relations department and offered some guidance and advice.
