Mr. [Syed Mohammad] Gharehi [Minister of Post, Telegraph and Telephone] came and gave a report on the telecommunications situation; Very satisfied.
In the evening [Mr. Farooq al-Shora], the Syrian Foreign Minister came and brought the message of Mr. Hafez Asad and the report of the negotiations with the Russians during the Soviet trip. He claims that the Russians want to have good relations with us and are ready to reach an understanding in Iraq. They give the possibility of accepting the removal of Saddam. We allowed Hafez Asad to act in this regard. He vaguely accepted some kind of negotiation between Iraq and Syria, but he assured that the direction of Syria is to preserve Iran's friendship and the process will end in [our] favor.
In the evening, I went to the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. We were the guests of Ayatollah Khamenei. After the prayer, we discussed with Mr. Khamenei about the [Islamic Republic] party and its future. I was supposed to participate in the next meeting of the Central Council; I have not participated for some time because of the one-dimensionalization of the party.
