Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – March 29, 1984

I read the reports in the parliament until half past seven in the morning. The trip of foreign journalists to the Majnoon Islands had good effects. Then we moved to Qom. At half past nine in the morning, we arrived at Mr. Montazeri's house. I talked with them for about two hours. They had articles about war, IRGC, prisoners, distribution of goods, subsidies, villagers, Jihad, etc., and I criticized them for their critical stances and spreading their criticisms through the media. I think we had a useful and constructive meeting and negotiations.

Then I went to the house of Ayatollah [Syed Shahab al-Din Marashi] of Najafi. No important issue was raised. It was a ceremony. They only wanted to forgive the mistakes of the erring clerics during the Shah's time; They are not well either.

At noon, I went to Mr. Meshkini's house. Mr. [Mohammed Mahdi] Rabbani [Amleshi] and [Mohammed] Momin also came. We had a meeting of the chairmanship of the Assembly of Experts. Decisions were made about the time and place of the second meeting and the expert building. In the evening, I negotiated with Mr. Maadikhah, the secretary of the [Islamic Republic] Party of Qom. He complained about the weak facilities and weak position of the party and himself. Consulted about the Qom elections and the approval of the candidates of the Madrasin community [Qom Theological Seminary], Mr. [Ahmed] Azari [Qomi] and [Abdul Karim] Shari'i. I said that whatever the party constituencies commented on, should be implemented; Because the domains are supposed to act independently.

Then I went to see Ayatollah Golpaygani. They are doing very well. They have not stopped criticizing the way the government works. I said that even though Mr. [Latfullah] Safi is on your behalf in the Guardian Council and usually gives opinions in the name of Sharia and the Constitution, there is no place for you to complain anymore. They said that they are only observers and do not interfere. Then I went to visit the shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh and gave a lecture to the people and students in the sacred courtyard.

After Maghrib prayer, I talked with Mr. Seyyed Hadi Hashemi and Mr. Qazi Askar about Beit Ayatollah Montazeri and the need to control the news. They also spoke about the problems of the secretariat of the Central Council of Friday Imams and the president's lack of trust in it and the interference with Mr. Abtahi Kashani's work as the Imam's representative in the affairs of the office of Friday Imams.

At night, we had a meeting with the community of teachers. More was discussed about the war; I gave explanations to clear the confusion. They wanted the Islamic Republic Party to support Mr. Azari [Qomi] and Mr. Shari. I said it is related to Qom Party itself. I did a TV interview and came to Tehran. I arrived at eleven o'clock at night. Chastity and children had returned from Rafsanjan. Late, I ate ready dinner and slept.
