Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 12, 1981

Early in the morning, Colonel Vahid [Dastjerdi], the Chief of Police, came and gave a report on the situation in the cities. Overall, he described the situation as good and the opponents’ activities as weak and scattered. He said that the offices of the Coordination [Office] were being attacked frequently and that the military and law-enforcement commanders were very pleased with this change; they were relieved of the duality, their duties had become clear, and the contradictions of the past had been troubling them. That is a valid point.

Then Mr. Mostafa Mirkhani came and, on behalf of Dr. Peyman, requested a meeting and an understanding. He himself was also unhappy about no longer being among his former like-minded associates and was looking for a solution.

Mr. Beheshti called, and we exchanged views on current issues. Ahmad Agha Khomeini called and suggested greater vigilance in the provinces, and spoke of the possibility of demonstrations by opponents in Qazvin and of the enormous welcome from the people of Kashan.

Yasser is being fussy and wants to go to a garden, the mountains, or somewhere else for entertainment. Effat and Fati are going to Mrs. Aghdas Marashi’s home to visit the Rafsanjani relatives. I want to rest at home—if they let me.

Fati and Saeed returned in the afternoon and spoke of the huge crowd at today’s Friday prayers. People were chanting slogans against Mr. Bani-Sadr, and the officials were telling them not to.

Mr. Fotouhi, our neighbor and Furouhar’s deputy, came and spoke about his disagreement with Furouhar. He claimed that one of the judges at Evin Prison was taking bribes. It was decided that they should provide evidence and a lead for pursuing the matter.

In the afternoon, a group of disabled people and war-injured people came and related astonishing stories of the sacrifice and bravery of the combatants.

The mother of a martyr came. She herself is a factory worker in Isfahan, and her son was one of those martyred in the bombing of Dolatou Prison and had been the former head of the Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence in Kurdistan. She is very patient, steadfast, and resilient.

At night, Mr. Lahouti came, and we had an extensive discussion about his position. He criticized the position of the Imam, ourselves, the people, radio and television, and the Parliament.

Late at night, Mr. Mohsen Rezaei reported that thirty people wanted to impeach the government.
