Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – July 26, 1982

I went to the Majlis early. I studied the reports. The Majlis is on its summer recess, the air conditioning was off and my office was hot. Mr [Mohammad Taghi] Banki, the head of the Planning and Budget Organisation, came with his deputies and spoke about their work, including statistics, cartography, satellites, planning and so on.

The body of Mr [Seyedounes] Arfani, the representative for Tavalish, who passed away yesterday in a car accident, was brought to the front of the Majlis and I spoke.

In the afternoon, a factory owner came and complained about pressure from government officials on the private sector and the expansion of cases under clauses B and C of the Industries Protection Act.

The commanders of the army's training centres, who were holding a seminar, came. We prayed the noon and afternoon prayers in congregation, and I spoke to them about the need for a transformation in the army's training content and format, which is becoming too doctrinal, and had lunch with them.

I saw Mr [Seyed Mahmoud] Da'ayi in the canteen. He has been commissioned by the Imam, along with a group of MPs, to visit Evin Prison to investigate the alleged wrongdoing they have heard about.

In the afternoon I had an interview about Messrs Bahner and Rajai. I met with a section of the Organisation of Islamic Revolution Fighters and with Mr Mohsen Norbakhsh, Governor of the Central Bank, who spoke of the improvement in the currency situation and we discussed exchange policies.

They came from the Syrian embassy. Algeria had told them that Iran had abandoned its condition for Saddam's trial; they were concerned. I dealt with matters in the Majlis until ten o'clock in the evening, then returned home late and went to bed late. Dr Ghaeli and Dr Haeri came on behalf of the Islamic Doctors' Association and expressed their support for the Freedom Movement.
