Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – December 3, 1988

I went to the police academy at half past eight in the morning. The ceremony was done. They marched. I spoke for them and gave the awards to the first, second and third graduates and visited the knowledge discovery booth. They gave explanations about the method of crime detection and identification of the criminal and the tools of forgery. Then we visited the simulator for driving education and school car replicas, and we got some explanations while being served. I reached the parliament at half past eleven.

Mr. [Alireza] Moiri [Political Deputy Prime Minister] came. He gave a report on the plan of concentration of information, which is supposed to be presented in the Expediency Council. The evening of Timsar Torabi [commander of security and intelligence of the army] came. He brought tapes of counterrevolutionary confessions. Mr. Shahraki came. He gave a report on the water situation in Iraq and the possibility of straining the relations between Iraq and Türkiye over the Euphrates water.

The commanders of Imam Sadiq's brigade came. They talked about the shortage of clerics who volunteer to serve in the armed forces and suggested the mandatory sending of students for military service. Sarshab Mr. Hosni Saadi, the commander of Nazaja [Army Ground Force] came and gave a work report.

The night of the meeting of the heads of forces was in Mr. Khamenei's office. Dr. Velayati raised the issues of Lebanon and Afghanistan. We were supposed to meet with [Sheikh Mohammad Mahdi] Shamsuddin [Speaker of the Lebanese Shiite Assembly] and promise support and enter into negotiations with the Soviets about Afghanistan. The news of demonstrations on the Soviet border and the Islamic streaks of the movement and Imam's letter to Gorbachev were brought up. I reached home at half past ten. Fati's home was chastity.
