Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 23, 1982

I was at home until seven-thirty, studying. Mohsen, who had visited a uranium mine around Yazd yesterday and had brought back a sample, recommended cooperating with Mr. [Reza] Amrollahi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization. At eight in the morning, I went to the Imam's advisory office at the Joint Staff headquarters. The Chief of Staff also arrived. [Colonel Salimi], the Minister of Defense, gave a report on the military industries and the work of the office.

At nine o'clock, I visited one of the Air Force centers in Qasr-e Firouzeh to see the work of a group of Air Force technicians who had successfully installed an ADS4 radar. They had accomplished something significant. It required a high level of expertise; many people had not believed it could be done and had obstructed the effort. They themselves claimed that the Americans had installed a similar one in Karaj over a long period and at great expense, whereas they had installed this one for only 500,000 tomans. They seemed very happy that the Revolution had made this possible for them; under the previous regime, Iranians had not been allowed to work on advanced equipment.

At ten, I visited the old National Consultative Assembly building, including the store and the site of a hall whose foundations had been laid during the Shah's regime and which needs to be completed for the future. At noon, Mr. [Asadollah] Bayat came for consultation about transcribing the recordings of my Friday Prayer sermons for the Payam-e Enqelab magazine.

At night, we held a meeting with the Cultural Revolution Headquarters, the Ministry of Science, the President, and the Prime Minister to resolve the disagreements between the Headquarters and the Minister, but we got nowhere because the Headquarters has no defined duties. Overlapping responsibilities and rights arise.
