Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – April 25, 1981

First thing in the morning, I went to Parliament. The governor and the IRGC (Sepah) commander of Urmia came and spoke of the situation there and the conflict between the governor-general and Messrs. Hassani and Zakiani; and since this matter is under discussion in the Security Council, they had some suggestions.

We had a bylaws meeting. We made the right of representatives to resign conditional upon Parliament's approval. Messrs. [Engineer Mehdi] Bazargan, Dr. [Kazem] Sami, and [Ali] Golzadeh Ghafouri were upset, as this law to some extent prevents obstructionism by the minority.

In the afternoon, the Chargé d'Affaires of the British Embassy came to see me. He sought the expansion of relations; we did not have a good interpreter, and not much was discussed.

Mr. Seyyed Isa Tabataba'i came from Lebanon and spoke of his differences with Mr. Seyyed Sadeq Mousavi Shirazi, the impossibility of cooperation, and the difficulties of their life in Lebanon.

Then Mr. Hesam al-Din Emami, a press commentator, came and complained about the underperformance and lack of editorial direction of Kayhan and Ettela'at, as well as the weakness of propaganda, and offered useful suggestions.

We had an appointment with Engineer Bazargan, but due to numerous visitors, it did not take place. He came, but there was not enough time.

At night, we were guests at Mr. Nateq-Nouri's home. The turbaned comrades—Messrs. Beheshti, Bahonar, Khamenei, [Abdal-Majid] Ma'adikhah, Safa'i, Hamidzadeh, Haqqani, and others—were present, and consultations were held and decisions were made regarding the Combatant Clergy Association (Ruhaniyat-e Mobarez), the party's clergy branch, and Mr. Bani-Sadr's proposed debate.
