Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – April 14, 1981

I went to Parliament. We had an open session and [discussed] the double-urgency motion to amend the Election Law; the first round of elections whose candidates had not made it to Parliament was annulled due to [existing] flaws in the continuation of that election.

In the afternoon, I went to a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Islamic Republican Party. Important issues were raised: taking a stance against the liberals' obstructionism, analyzing Haj Ahmad Aqa Khomeini's interview and the shift in stance in favor of the Line of the Imam, elections, and a trip to the East at the invitation of North Korea.

At night at the Prime Minister's Office, we had a weekly consultative meeting with Messrs. Beheshti, Khamenei, and Bahonar; [in this meeting] the general line of nationalizing foreign trade and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as utilizing forces close to the Line of the Imam, was raised. We wrote the appointment decree for Mr. [Mohammad] Yazdi as our representative on the Dispute Resolution Committee. We received news of a victory in the war in Shush, and the issue of a fifty-six-million-dollar fraud regarding arms purchases was brought up; upon inquiring with the Ministry of Defense, it turned out to be true, but the swindling company's assets and these very funds in the bank have been frozen—at least according to the claim of Mr. [Javad] Fakouri, the Minister of Defense. It was agreed that they would submit a full report.

News had been received of counter-revolutionary activity in acts of sabotage in Kurdistan, which Colonel Vahid [Dastjerdi, chief of Police (Shahrbani)] was questioned about; it turned out the reports were exaggerated. In a letter, more than one hundred representatives endorsed the decisiveness of the judiciary in dealing with counter-revolutionaries and liberals.
