Hafez al-Assad (1930–2000) was a Syrian politician and general, one of the senior leaders of the Syrian Ba'ath Party, a former commander of the Syrian Air Force, and served as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Armed Forces for 30 years.

In 1970, the Ba'ath Party's army, along with forces from the official Syrian army under Assad's command, staged a coup against the remaining military leadership, through which Hafez al-Assad rose to power and the presidency.

According to the laws he enacted, the Syrian People's Assembly and the government became exclusively controlled by the Ba'ath Party, while the military, intelligence agencies, and security forces were all subordinated to the president.

After Hafez al-Assad's death, the Syrian Ba'ath Party held a meeting and elected his son, Bashar al-Assad, as president.
