Yasmin Ansari, the first Democrat of Iranian descent in the U.S. Congress

Yasmin Ansari, an Iranian-born politician and member of the Democratic Party of the United States, began her work in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday, January 4.

The 32-year-old has been elected to Arizona's 3rd Congressional District and is the youngest member of the new Congress. This historic achievement makes her the first Iranian-born Democrat in the U.S. Congress and the second Iranian-born woman in the history of the House of Representatives.

Ansari previously served on the Phoenix City Council and served as vice president of the council. A student of international relations at Stanford and Cambridge Universities, he did an undergraduate internship in the office of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Ansari has vowed to support democratic rights, reproductive rights, and issues related to climate change in Congress, and to be the voice of the Iranian-American community.
