“Tom Barrack,” the U.S. Special Envoy for Syrian Affairs, on Al Jazeera, [spoke about] the existence of Middle Eastern countries.

“Tom Barrack,” the U.S. Special Envoy for Syrian Affairs, on Al Jazeera, denied the existence of Middle Eastern countries and said: “The Middle East? There is no such thing as the Middle East. We know this. There are only tribes and villages there. The nation-state was created by the British and the French in 1916.”

Referring to the historic Sykes–Picot Agreement, he added: “They took what was left of the Ottoman Empire, drew straight lines around it, and called it a nation-state. But the Middle East doesn’t work that way.”

The U.S. Special Envoy, rejecting the possibility of political convergence in the region, emphasized: “It is an illusion to think that 27 different countries with 110 different ethnic groups can align with political concepts. What do they actually align with? With the idea that my life and my children’s lives will be better.”
