This is the second resolution against Iran in the past six months.
In tonight's vote, 19 of the 35 members of the Council voted in favor of the resolution proposed by the three European powers and the United States, with 12 abstentions, and only Russia, China, and Burkina Faso voted against it.
The resolution calls on the IAEA Director General to submit a comprehensive report on the status of Iran's nuclear activities and Iran's lack of cooperation with the IAEA for consideration at the meeting before the next meeting of the Board of Governors in March.
Iran had said it would react immediately if the resolution was adopted.
In the hours before the vote, Iran's foreign minister had called his counterparts in the member states of the Board of Governors and asked them not to vote on the proposed resolution.
The adoption of this resolution puts Tehran on the path to broad international sanctions.
