According to the British Maritime Commerce Unit, "electronic disorder" against commercial ships in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is on the rise.

The British Department of Defense agency acts as a bridge between commercial shipping and the army.

The institution says numerous reports of the problems related to the tracking system used by the ships, known as the automatic identification system, have been designed to detect the location of the ships.  About 5 % of the world's oil is transmitted through the Strait of Hormuz.

"The level and severity of the Persian Gulf have a significant impact on the report of the ship's position," the statement said.

The agency urged ships to be more cautious when traveling in the area, but did not name the source of the disorder.
