Ayatollah Seyed Asadullah Madani was assassinated

On September 11, 1981, Ayatollah Seyyed Asadollah Madani, Imam Khomeini's representative in East Azerbaijan and the Friday prayer leader of Tabriz, was attacked after finishing Friday prayers while performing the recommended prayers .

The assailant approached him with a grenade, and the explosion resulted in Madani's death . In the official narrative of the Islamic Republic, the perpetrator of this attack was identified as a member of the Mojahedin-e-Khalq Organization . Madani was later recognized in the official discourse of the Islamic Republic as the second "Martyr of the Mihrab" .
