Twenty-eight years later, on August 18, 1981, Iran was at the height of its war with Iraq. News arrived from the fronts, some of it real, some of it manufactured to boost public morale.

In those same days, mass arrests of political opponents continued inside the country. Prisons were full, and revolutionary courts were issuing sentences without pause.

This day showed that in Iran, the war was not only on the fronts; it was also inside the country. The government was fighting both Iraq and internal opponents. And the law, in the midst of all this, was merely a tool to justify suppression.
