Adoption of Security Council Resolution 620 on Chemical Weapons

On September 4, 1988, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 620; one of the most important international documents related to the use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq War. In this resolution, the Security Council, citing the reports of the Secretary-General's dispatched missions, expressed concern over the continued use of chemical weapons in the war and condemned such use.

The resolution also emphasized the need to control the export of materials and equipment that could be used in the production of chemical weapons . This resolution was adopted when the Iran-Iraq war was nearing its end, but the case of chemical weapons use remained open.

September 4, 1988, thus, stands as one of the important dates in the transition of the war's file from the battlefield to the arena of international law and diplomacy.
