The conviction of Jafar Panahi in the Revolutionary Court was issued in absentia, and it does not necessarily mean it will be executed.

If the assistant prosecutor for the execution of sentences summons him to serve the sentence, he can request a retrial by objecting to the initial verdict issued, and subsequently pursue further judicial stages through the formation of an in-person court session and the filing of an appeal after the verdict is served.

Panahi, after attending international festivals for several months, despite his previous prison sentence, finally returned to Iran on Sunday, April 9, due to the cancellation of flights from Bazargan land border.

A few months ago, the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Mr. Panahi to one year in prison.  He, who is a critic of the government, had previously said that he would return to Iran after finishing his activities.

Since the screening of "A Simple Accident", Mr. Panahi's new work, which received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, he has been in America and Europe.

The film was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Non-Adapted Screenplay and Best International Film, but did not win.

Panahi has faced judicial and security restrictions in Iran in recent years, and last year, after 14 years of being banned from leaving, he was allowed to leave Iran.

It is said that hours after Mr. Panahi's return, his mother died.
