Diary entry, July 29, 2001, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani: At noon, Ayatollah Khamenei called from Mashhad and suggested that the endorsement ceremony for President Khatami be held with my assistance, as in the previous term; I accepted.

Wednesday, August 1, 2001: Mr. Vahid from the Leader's office came; he brought the text of the presidential endorsement decree for Mr. Khatami, which I am supposed to read tomorrow. They said the Leader in Mashhad has become extremely fatigued and has returned to Tehran today for tomorrow's program.

Thursday, August 2, 2001: In the morning, we went to the Leader's office for the presidential endorsement ceremony of Mr. Khatami. The date on the endorsement plaque was written as 7/30/2001. I pointed it out, and they corrected it. During the ceremony, the Leader, Mr. Khatami, and I were on the stage. The Minister of Interior reported on the elections and read Mr. Khatami's credentials. I gave a brief introduction, read the Leader's endorsement decree, handed it to the Leader, and handed it to Mr. Khatami.

Postscript: Tomorrow, after listening to the speech and report of Ahmad Vahidi, the Minister of Interior, will Mohammad Mokhber take on this role and symbolically return the executive power of the country to the Leader of the Islamic Republic, who will then hand it over to Masoud Pezeshkian?
