The first session of the Assembly of Experts for Leadership was opened with a message from Imam Khomeini.

This assembly, which was tasked with supervising the Leader and electing him, was outwardly a symbol of the rule of law; but in practice, it became one of the key institutions for consolidating the structure of power.
