Tavakoli was a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, a former president of the Research Center of the Parliament, and a former member of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. 

Ahmad Tavakoli, born in 1951 in Behshahr, was the spokesperson for the government of Mohammad Ali Rajai and the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the first cabinet of Mir Hossein Mousavi. Tavakoli was a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, the former head of the Research Center of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, and a former representative in the Islamic Consultative Assembly. During the first term of the parliament, he was the representative of Behshahr and from the seventh to the ninth terms, he was the representative of the people of Tehran in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, and from the beginning of the seventh term until the early ninth term, he served as the head of the Research Center of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. Tavakoli was a candidate in the sixth and eighth presidential elections, in both of which he was considered the main rival to the winning candidates (Hashemi and Khatami) and finished in second place. Ahmad Tavakoli is the son of the cousin of the Larijani brothers and his wife is also their cousin.
