Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, in response to a question regarding the issue of house arrest, stated:
"Those who created the current situation had intentions beyond what is currently permissible. They wanted to completely eradicate opposition but were unable to do so.
They regarded themselves as the government of Imam Mahdi and believed that all those whose thoughts were not compatible with theirs should be completely removed from the scene, even through physical elimination." (2012)
