On March 29 and 30, 1979, when the referendum of the Islamic Republic was held, most of the marjas and scholars also participated in it. Even Ayatollah Seyyed Abolqasem Khoei issued a statement in support of the Islamic Republic and called on the people to participate in the referendum.

Ayatollah Shariatmadari had also participated in this referendum. The late Shariatmadari, however, objected to the way the referendum was held, believing that instead of "yes" or "no," people should be able to choose between multiple options.

He did not allow people to choose these two options, and suggested that voters should have the opportunity to write their preferred option on the ballot...

Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khansari was one of the marjas who did not like the elections. Even during the struggle against the Pahlavi regime, he did not support the fighters and revolutionaries much.

The late Allameh Tabataba'i also did not participate in any elections... Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Rouhani also refused to participate in the elections.

Even before the revolution, he did not agree with Imam Khomeini's revolutionary and political movements. Ayatollah Seyyed Reza Sadr was also one of the prominent clerics who had been angry with the Islamic Republic's ballot boxes...

Ayatollah Golpaygani, Mar'ashi Najafi, Sayyid Hasan Tabataba'i Qomi, Sayyid Muhammad Shirazi, Sayyid 'Abd Allah Shirazi, Sayyid Sadeq Rouhani, and Mirza Hashem Amoli were among those who participated in the referendum of the Islamic Republic.

In the face of the elections, the marjas of the first generation of the revolution tried to remind the people of the necessity of the time and encourage people to participate in this arena, although some marjas, such as Seyyed Sadegh Rouhani and Seyyed Hassan Tabataba'i Qomi, no longer participated in the elections.
