What is the story of the death of 70 dialysis patients?

This is just a quote from the officials of the Ministry of Health and is not evidence to confirm or reject the health fact sheet.

Yesterday, Salman Ishaqi, the spokesman of the Health Commission, claimed in a statement that 70 dialysis patients died due to consuming a solution contaminated with aluminum.

He added: This year, the Health and Treatment Commission of the Parliament was involved in the death of 50 dialysis patients due to the use of low-quality medicine, which was later said to be contaminated with the element of aluminum, and it was investigated by holding a meeting with the relevant officials. It was determined that one of the companies was negligent in this regard. In the first place, it was said that 10 to 12 dialysis patients in the cities of Mashhad and Isfahan died due to the use of the solution and with cerebral, infectious, seizure and coma symptoms, and after a while the death toll reached 50 people and so far 70 people have died.

Seyed Haider Mohammadi, head of the Food and Drug Organization, said in this regard: The eighth company is affiliated with the Astan Quds Razavi Endowments Productivity Foundation and produces dialysis drugs. As the reviews show, in June last year, there was apparently a small percentage of aluminum in the dialysis drugs of this company, and our reviews showed that these drugs had complications.

He added: Drugs for production are made up of a raw material, which has standards and based on that, they determine the indicators, for example, the amount of aluminum should not be more than the allowed limit, and if they do not comply, they will be rejected. Laboratories always consider a virtual limit and according to that drugs are checked unless they are injectable drugs, which the allowed limit is zero and must be sterilized.

The head of the Food and Drug Administration said: "The eighth company has always produced these serums and there has been no problem in the past and this is the first time that such a problem has been observed." By examining the purchased materials, it turned out that this problem was caused by two sources. The investigations of the eighth company showed that since December of last year, there were two sources that had high impurities and caused a high concentration of aluminum in the peritoneal serums and its complications were also related to the pollution. It complied. After this incident, the Ministry of Health sent a team to the Eighth Company for further study to determine where the source of the contamination was.

Mohammadi said: The eighth company also announced that pollution has occurred for both sources that produced these solutions. The reason for this incident was the lack of quality control on the products, in the tests carried out on the peritoneal dialysis solution of the eighth company, it was found that some of the products of this company did not meet the standard in terms of heavy metal pollution, especially aluminum, but some samples were acceptable.

He stated: According to the announcement of this organization, to immediately follow up on reports regarding the problems of a pharmaceutical product for dialysis patients, the head of the Food and Drug Organization visited the factory and closely examined the issue and issued the necessary orders. The expert team was sent to the reference laboratory and the location of the eighth pharmaceutical laboratory in Mashhad to investigate the issue. After the investigations, the problems of the raw materials and production of this product have been resolved, and currently the products produced by this company do not have any complications for patients. All products are reviewed by the Food and Drug Organization.

In the end, the head of the Food and Drug Organization added: On the other hand, a judicial case has been filed for this issue and it is awaiting follow-up by the judicial authorities./Mehr
